In evaluating the EverLED, the first thing we noticed was the brightness. It is incredibly bright -- significantly brighter than the standard bulb in a 3-cell D Maglite.

The second thing we noticed was the whiteness. It is very white compared to the yellow beam of a standard bulb. The whiteness adds to the apparent brightness and useability of the light. I understand from the manufacturer that there will be some variation in color which is dependent on the manufacturing process of these super performance LEDs. But, all units will be high quality and much closer to true white than a yellow krypton bulb.

How bright is it really? While there is no brightness specification from the manufacturer, an independent test revealed a whopping 1,560,000mcd brightness at 12" with 4 AA batteries. Regardless of the flashlight configuration, it produces a large volume of bright light.

The chart shows the relative brightness and battery life in a 2-D battery flashlight. More than 2 cells will provide some increase in brightness, and primarily an increase in battery life.

We tested an EverLED in a 2AA flashlight that takes the PR base bulbs. The transformation was stunning. Instead of a small yellow spot, the EverLED created a bright white search-light-style beam. It lit up trees 100 feet away and it could be seen on other trees even farther away.

With a new set of 2 Duracell AA batteries, the EverLED lasted 5 hours at high brightness. Then, it lasted another 3 hours with gradually diminishing light. After 8 hours it was still bright enough to navigate in darkness and do normal tasks. It produced more useable light than a krypton bulb with 1 hour old batteries. At about 8 1/2 hours it turned itself off, nicely showing its feature for saving rechargeable batteries.

While it works great in any PR bulb flashlight, it appears the EverLED was designed with the Maglite flashlights in mind. We have tested the EverLED in a 3D Maglite and a 4D Maglite. The brilliant white light is wonderful, and the adjustable focus works great because of the side emitting pattern of the EverLED bulb. For fans of Maglite flashlights, this is the bulb that finally makes it the ultimate flashlight.
