Watch caterpillars grow into colorful, lively butterflies - then set them free! The Butterfly Garden by Insect Lore makes it possible to study the caterpillar's transition as it matures, changes into a chrysalid, and finally emerges as a butterfly.

Included in your Butterfly Garden kit is a free certificate to be redeemed for small Painted Lady caterpillars. This has been done to insure that you receive the caterpillars when you want them. Each culture contains five caterpillars plus enough nutrients for their development. Three butterflies are guaranteed to be perfect specimens. Also included is a colorful butterfly house, a butterfly feeding kit, detailed instructions on their care and interesting butterfly information. (NOTE: Larvae is available only in the Continental U.S. and Alaska.)

You have two options when mailing in your free butterfly certificate. You may check "Ship ASAP" and you will receive your caterpillars 1 to 2 weeks from time of mailing. Or you may check "Ship week of" and indicate the week you want the caterpillars mailed to you. There is an additional $3.00 required when redeeming your certificate, for shipping and handling of the live larvae.

The larvae will arrive in a container with adequate food for their growth. They do not need anything other than the food provided inside the container. They start out very tiny with observable growth in size each day. In 7 to 10 days the caterpillars will make the fascinating change into the chrysalides. In another 7 to 10 days they will begin to emerge as beautiful Painted Lady butterflies. From receipt of the larvae, the entire metamorphosis takes approximately 3 weeks. (The display kits that we have used at KidEnergy have worked like clockwork.)

The life expectancy of the Painted Lady butterfly is 2 to 4 weeks. They may be kept in the observation box and fed a solution of sugar water (instructions included). After a few days of observing your butterflies, Insect Lore recommends releasing them into their natural environment. It is safe to do so if the temperature is 55 degrees or higher. Once released, the butterflies can often be seen for several days in the vicinity of their release. If the weather is too cold, the butterflies may be kept in the observation box for the duration of their life cycle. The inside of the box may be decorated with anything natural such as leaves, twigs, and rocks.

With proper supervision this kit is fascinating for children even as young as 2.
